When I found out a new 20th Anniversary Dirty Dancing DVD was coming out, I knew I had to have it. As a huge fan of the movie, I wouldn't pass up a chance to see previously unreleased footage and other goodies.
I did a search and saw the DVD for just $13.99 on the VH1 Shop Online Store. I had never heard of the site but curiosity got to me and, before I knew it, I was shopping and browsing all over the site.
This site has a huge variety of DVDs and CDs of both popular VH1 and other TV shows and series and totally unrelated stuff. It also sells books and more for very good prices!
This is a sister site to MTV but is dedicated solely to selling products.
What the Site Sells
This site sells DVDs, CDs, and books. There are VH1 Behind the Scenes DVDs, reality show series DVDs, and other VH1 related material but, much more than that, there are hundreds of offerings totally unrelated to VH1, especially workout videos which are priced cheaper than anywhere I have seen.
Navigation and Ordering
Drop down boxes make navigating easy. There are many categories for you to browse or you can do a search to narrow down your choices. You can sort by price (high to low or low to high), name, brand, best selling, or newest release.
Of course, they highlight their VH1 offerings but they don't push you to buy, say, the new Celebrity Fit Club Bootcamp fitness DVD over any other.
Descriptions range from very good to not so great depending on the product. I found myself looking up details on Amazon then going back to the site to shop.
Still, most items have at least a decent description of what you will get if you purchase the item.
If you want an item, click to add it to your cart. When you are finished shopping, you can use either regular checkout or Google checkout. Because I would get $10.00 off my order if I used Google's checkout, I did.
Shipping, by the way, is free for all orders in the US over $40.00.
You need to supply your shipping and billing details and email address. Pay by major credit card and you are done.
Because I used Google's checkout, all my tracking is done through Google. If you use the regular checkout, you can track items right on the VH1 Shop site.
Tax was charged which I hated but it is a necessary evil.
Confirmation emails will arrive as will status emails and shipping ones. In stock merchandise arrives fast, about five days.
My Experience
After I preordered my Dirty Dancing DVD, I browsed around. I liked what I saw. There were so many different items to check out! CDs of every variety, DVDs of popular VH1 shows as well as any type you can imagine, music CDs, books both about and by musicians and just general fare. However, what got me was their very extensive fitness workout DVD collection.
They have older and brand new workouts for prices lower than anywhere I have seen them on the net. I ordered several, all much less expensive than at Amazon.
My only problem was the descriptions were very generic and I wanted more so I went to other sites to look for reviews and more detailed info at times.
After gathering that info, I placed my order which included several workout DVDs, a book, a music video DVD, and a music CD. I used Google's checkout after registering with the site with the usual name and address stuff.
I received my $10.00 discount and my free shipping but was charged New York state tax. Still, I got some great bargains!
I received an email with my order details and another one informing me that a couple of items were on back order. I knew the Dirty Dancing DVD would be because it isn't officially released for another week but there was one other item backordered which will be automatically canceled if it isn't in stock within 30 days.
My items came from two different warehouses. I got the bulk of my purchase very fast and the second part two days later.
Packing was very simple. The stuff was in a cardboard sealed thing like when you seal food in bags for freezing. Everything was as it should be with no damage.
I am pleased. I will see when the one back ordered item comes and how well informed they keep me but, at this writing, I am happy with this site and will definitely go back. The prices are too good not to, at least at the things I looked at.
Not to mention that newly released Dancing with the Stars workout is front and center on the home page and I just know I will end up buying the darn thing even though I can't dance to save my life.
Just a note: If you go to www.vh1shop.com, you will be redirected to MTV, which is much larger and has all kinds of music and show related stuff on it. I can't even finds the VH1 Shop from that site. If you just want to shop, bypass that URL and use the direct link one instead.
Shipping and Returns
Shipping is free for orders over $40.00. Orders adding up to less than $40.00 are calculated by total purchase price and the cost is reasonable. They ship only to the US at this time.
Sales tax is charged in TX, IL, GA, NV, NJ, CA, FL, and NY.
Returns are accepted within 30 days but each item has a certain return criteria. For instance, DVDs and CDs cannot be opened. If they are defective, they can, however, be exchanged. Books have to be in unused condition. The entire list is on their page along with a good, informative set of FAQs you can read so you know exactly what the deal is with the site.
Conclusion
I like the large variety of products from not yet released to older hard to find stuff. The workout DVDs I bought were the cheapest on the net. I was shocked! Everything I bought was reasonably priced.
I got the $10.00 off with no hassles from Google and I got free shipping as promised.
My order was broken up into two parts but everything except the one backordered (very old) workout DVD and the DVD that isn't released yet came fast. Five and seven days for those. That is with free shipping too.
In all, I am satisfied with my experience and will return. I am not so sure I like Google checkout though. I will use the regular one next time so I can track things on the site rather than having to rely on Google. I like to stay in touch with the website I spend my money on.
I give this site 4 stars. Prices are very good and everything went along very smoothly. Variety and selection is great, too!
